Labor Day Weekend marks the end of summer and there is no better way to celebrate the changing of seasons and the beginning of a new school year than heading to Midtown Sacramento for the 26th Anniversary of Sacramento Rainbow Festival.
This exciting event was founded in 1986 by local businessman Terry Sidie, a longtime supporter of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer community. In the beginning the festival was created by Sidie to help raise funds for the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center. Twenty-six years later over $500,000 has been raised to help an ever-expanding list of non-profits. The event also serves to educate and bring awareness to the public the services those organizations provide.
This year the fun begins, Friday, August 31 when 2012 Rainbow Festival hosts dance parties throughout several venues in the Lavender Heights district. The festival Kick-Off Party is at Badlands. Yara Sofia of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars performs with Pollo Del Mar and her cast of Divas from San Francisco’s famous drag show, “Glamzone”. The party starts at 8:00pm with a $5.00 cover. Also the ever popular Club Papi is at Faces Nightclub.
The fun continues Saturday, September 1, 2012 with “Rainbow Ball” at Badlands featuring Adult Entertainment Stars, Underwear Models, Drag Queen Pop-Up Performances, and a special meet and greet with select Rainbow Festival performing artists. This party begins at 10:00pm.
Sunday, September 2, 2012 early morning street closings at 20th Street and K Street will transform Lavender Heights into the hottest Labor Day Weekend Street Fair in Sacramento.
Beginning at 10:00am there will be four entertainment stages and two dance areas as well as various vendors and non-profit booths.
For the first time Sacramento Rainbow festival will allow beer and wine throughout the festival. There will also be a shaded seating area to rest and drink with friends.
The Main Stage will host the Opening Ceremony at 11:00am. From then until 6:00pm there will be wall-to-wall music and entertainment. Top performers include Deborah Cox, Debby Holiday, Lisa Lisa, Utra Nate, Luciana, Erica Jayne, Jessica Sutra, Raquela, and local dance troupe, Thee Boyyyz and spoken word artist, Jovi Radtke. The Woman’s Stage, Latin Stage and Detour Alley© will round out entertainment that is sure to offer something for everyone.
This year introduces Detour Alley©, a new area for adults only. It offers something a little, let’s say, different. The area will be discreetly located between Faces and Lumens, with the entrance through the alley. Full bar services are available in this play area. more…
